Cold Enviroments - Working in the Cold

What factors modify our response to cold?

A cold environment challenges the worker in three ways: by air temperature, air movement (wind speed), and humidity (wetness). In order to work safely, these challenges have to be counterbalanced by proper insulation (layered protective clothing), by physical activity and by controlled exposure to cold (work/rest schedule).

Air Temperature: Air temperature is measured by an ordinary thermometer in degrees Celsius (°C) or degrees Fahrenheit (°F).

Wind Speed: Different types of commercially-available anemometers are used to measure wind speed or air movement. These are calibrated in meters per second (m/s), kilometers per hour (km/h) or miles per hour (mph). Air movement is usually measured in m/s while wind speed is usually measured in km/h or mph. The following is a suggested guide for estimating wind speed if accurate information is not available:

8 km/h (5 mph): light flag moves,
16 km/h (10 mph): light flag fully extended,
24 km/h (15 mph): raises newspaper sheet,
32 km/h (20 mph): causes blowing and drifting snow.

2011 National Champions.

All the regional races have been completed in Pro Challenge racing. Our team stands at the top of the points standings and has won the overall National points championship for Pro Challenge. It is really great to be the #1 driver and team in the series. There were over 100 drivers competing for the PASCAR National Championship. What makes it even more incredible is that we won it in 10 events. Other competitors in 2nd and 3rd place raced 11 and 13 races. Thanks to everyone who helped make this season so great. The new trophy is on the way and I will have a team picture with the Canadian and the National trophies soon.

2011 CHAMPIONS

After a very long uphill battle, our team has won the championship for a second time. We put our heads down and worked harder than ever to complete the task. The season started terrible and we only could race 10 of the 11 races this year. It is very special to be able to miss a race and still win the season championship points. I want to thank everyone at apprenticesearch.com, the posters and readers of this blog, my family friends and team sponsors for a great year. The motivation you provide is what makes our team get through the difficult times. It was a season of suspension, engine, clutch and chassis changes and adjustments. My team stuck together and we raced as hard as we could every night. Thanks again to everyone who helped and offered support to us. Maybe now my kids will ease up on me a little. They each have a "Piston Cup" in their rooms. Now we start to look forward to some races in Florida to try and win the overall National Points Championship. Anyone up for a trip down south.

Fastest at Flamboro

Usually being the fastest car means you will win right? Not this time out for the apprenticesearch team. We moved from 8th to 3rd in the heat race. Started the feature in 9th. We quicly caught the front group of cars and tried hard to pass on every lap. Trouble is the cars in front were 3 wide. Finally I picked them off one at a time. Inside, then outside them through the middle. Looks like I need new numbers on both sides of the car again. LOL. With 6 laps to go the track was clear in front of me, then I could see the #3 car way in the corner ahead of me. He had broken free at the start of the race and was miles out in front of the rest of the cars. Lap after lap, I kept getting closer. On lap 19 I had made up 1/2 the tracks distance and was pressuring for the win. Too bad for us they shortened the race length to only 20 laps. One more lap and we were winners. It is good to be fast heading into the last round at Sunset. One more win for the year would be a nice way to cap off the Championship.

Fan Appreciation Night

Mosport is one of my favourite tracks. Tight, bumpy turns and super long straightaways. This years race was pretty good for the team. We were blocked in the heat race and forced to try some alternative lines. They didnt work and we staretd the feature in 12th place. After a long break to hand out candy, stickers and cards we were ready to race. We quickly moved through the feild and at the checkers we were 2nd. Bad news is we lost points, good news.... it was minimal. We head to Flamboro for the secong last race of the year. we are still leading the points, but the guys behind seem to be getting closer. Time for another win?

After sitting in traffic for almost 4 hours, the team finally pulled into the racetrack. We were late and missed the first practice session. Not to worry, so we thought. We started the car for the next round of practice and it had a miss. Cylinder # 1 was dead. No ignition. Out come the spark plugs and in go 4 fresh NGK plugs. Out on the track we go and set the second fastest time. We come in and change tires, go back out and the car is terrible. It is rolling over, handling very bad and is very slow. We started checking the springs, shocks, tires, all look proper. Then we find it. A broken sway bar mount of the left side of the car. We install a new arm, and out we go for the heat race. The car worked as usual and I moved from 9th to 3rd in 10 laps. It was a great heat race. The feature was interesting. On the start I had a car half way up my hood and a car under the rear of my car, all this and going 95 MPH. It was scary to say the least. We sorted out the damage and could only drive up to 4th place. It was a hard night of work. But it was one of those nights we can look back on and be happy to say we did not lose a single point for the championship. Thanks Dave for all the hard work. We never had a break all night. Glad the damage was minor. Now we go to Mosport. Another very fast difficult track to race on. See you Sept 10.

Keith Hoare teaches culinary arts at Thistletown Collegiate Institute in Rexdale. Like Gordon Ramsey with a smile, Hoare is the previous owner of a catering business, now on to a second career.

He has been teaching for just four years, and is proud to teach at this technical school which he says arms his kids with much-needed real-life skills.

Lightening Strikes Again

For those who follow the series, I am not talking about the driver of the #00 car. His nickname is lightening, because he is fast and you never know when or where he will strike next. Anyway, the real kind of lightening showed up at Sauble and we had a big storm ruin another day of racing. Mother Nature has been pretty upset these days. I hope everyone made it through the storm OK last night. Friday looks good for Kawartha, see you there. Leave the umbrellas at home!!!

Flamboro Speedway hosted another great night of racing action. The Ontario Pro Challenge series and the Triple Crown event for the late models were the show of the night. We started out in fine fashion.... Actually we started in the wrong direction, at the hands of the 99 car. After a short trip on 2 wheels, then 4 wheels and then backwards into turn 1. Wow, what a ride. The wall was about 6" from our back bumper. I sure am glad we have new brakes on the car this year. We went on to finish 5th in the heat. We started quickly in the feature and by the halfway mark we were passing cars on the inside and outside racing grooves. The car was hooked up really well. With 10 laps to go, we took the lead and drove away from second place. It was a great points night, racing night and even the rain held off. We still hold the points lead, by 14 points now. We can never back down, these drivers are way to good to start to take it easy. We need more good nights if we want to repeat as champions.

Finally after a few years of hard work we are finally back in first place. When you add up the effort, parts, travel and expences it is truly amazing to see how difficult it is to run up front in the Pro Challenge division.
With a heat win and a big feature win at our home track, we gained valuable points and now have an 8 point lead in first place.
The apprenticesearch car is looking good, running fast and we are looking for another win this Sat Aug 6th at Flamboro Speedway.

New # 2

Our first trip to Sunset was exciting. We shared the weekend with the Super Late model cars. They have the biggest engines and tires in Ontario for short track racing. They were posting times in the 14.5 second range. All the time adding Hoosier rubber to the tracks outside line. They use the same compound as our cars and the track was very sticky. We were fast in our heat race, and you could throw a blanket over the top 5 for the entire feature race. We were sideways, up high, down low and the car was great everywhere on the track. So were the guys in front of us. Our older set of tires worked well against those who had a new set on. we finished 5th in one of the most fun races I have been in.

On our second date back to Sunset we shared the weekend with the Ontario Sportsman series. These guys also use the same tire compound as our cars. This time the track was a slippery as I have ever seen it. Second in the heat race all over the car in front. we started our feature after the OSS cars were ion the track. It was a mess. They did 100 laps and only had 7 cars running at the end of the race. As soon as I pulled on the track, all I could smell was old gear oil, motor oil and the dreaded blown motor smell. I knew the track was slippery, but this was like driving on an icy road. Good news is we made some adjustments to the car to make it stick in the turns better. We over adjusted and I am glad we did. The car worked really well on the slippery track. We passed some cars on the outside (very hard to do at Sunset)and then drove it in the corners really deep to pass on the inside. One lap I passed 4 cars, 2 outside and 2 inside. The top 3 broke away from the pack until a caution came out for a huge wreck. 2 cars nose to nose on the back straightaway. Both drivers were OK, but their cars were a mess. We tried on the remaining laps to get past the leader, but no luck. At the finish we were on the outside at his door. A couple more laps and I might have got the win.
we are moving up the points nicely and sit 8 points out of the championship lead with half the season remaining. 2 big races at my home track Flamboro are up next. I Hope to take a win or 2 and the points lead by mid August.

Much better at Varney

The smallest track we race is Varney. The high Banked oval produces great racing lines but it makes it difficult to pass. For the first time in Pro Challenge we ran Twin 25 lap features. 25 before the intermission and 25 after. We started 3rd last in the field of cars and worked really hard to make up some ground. At the end of 25 laps we were in 3rd place. A few quick adjustments to the car during the break made it much better on corner entry. We started 3rd and made a pass around the outside to get 2nd spot. From there we pressured the leader and tried several attempts to get by. The driver in front did a great job, making no mistakes and driving a line I could not get past.
This was a much greater finish for our team and we were one of 3 cars to post lap times in the 13 second range all night.
Maybe this spare motor is pretty good after all.

Big Win At The Beach

It may not be Daytona, but a win at Sauble Beach is a really tough thing to accomplish. In our series history, only 3 drivers have won feature events at the 1/4 mile oval. What a crazy night of weather, slight rain, fog and a cool mist that left you seeing your breath. After a quick practice to test the spare motor, and new tire set, we were confident in the set up on the apprenticesearch.com car. We won the first heat race and really needed to back it up in the feature. We are behind in points and wanted a solid night to get us back into the top 5. The feature was very tough, the track was slippery and the other drivers were quick. We did our best to get out front early and stayed there. We won the shortened 25 lap feature by 2 car lengths. That finish was good enough to move us back up the points into 4th place. Another good showing and we will crack the top 3. Thanks to our welder Scott for helping us repair a few issues. Those late nights in the shop seem to have paid off. Up next is the super high banking of Varney June 25.

Rain and some missing teeth

So far this year Mother Nature has not been very cooperative with the Pro Challenge racing schedule. After the first night was rained out, we made the trip in the rain to Varney speedway. It rained all the way there and as soon as we pulled in the driveway, the sun came out. The track was steaming as the water evaporated in the heat. Finally our first laps of the year. We tried a new setup, and it worked fantastic. We were the fastest in turns 3-4 and that showed on the stop watch. The top of the speed chart, what a great way to start. On with some new tires and into the heats we go. Starting 9th, we worked our way up to 3rd by the halfway mark. Then the car started to have an issue in the transmission. It was jumping in and out of 3rd gear. We managed to finish 4th. Upon further inspection, it was decided that we try to start the feature and use gears 2 and 4 to try and compete. On the warm up laps I tried driving but the noise that came from the motor was an terrible grinding and crunching sound, there's my missing teeth. At that point we had to bring the car in before we had a major engine failure. The first attempt at a feature race and our first and only DNF that I can remember. All the hours of preparing the car, and this happens 10 laps in. With the sealed motor program our series runs, we are not permitted to open the engines and check for issues. So off the motor goes to North Carolina for a fresh rebuild. In goes our trusty spare and off to Flamboro we go. The rain held off, but the good old Hydro was out in the surrounding area. Funny thing is our car was way up in the air on the hoist when the power went out. Good thing they called the races, we had no way to get the car off the hoist without hydro. Pretty hard to explain, we could see the car, walk under it, but had no way to get it down from 72" in the air. Now we have it on stands, on the ground and we head up to Sauble Beach. We have good luck there and plan on making some ground up in the points system. Currently 14th and looking forward to a big improvement.

Maaco at Brock Ford, located at 4500 Drummond Road in Niagara Falls has the distinction of becoming the first shop in Canada to convert to Maaco. The Collision Repair and Auto Painting facility presents a complete Maaco menu of retail and fleet services.

Maaco at Brock Ford currently employs 2 apprentices, Brendon Hall (auto body) and Cole Paquet (prepper/painter) in the trade of Auto body and Collision Damage Technician. Being a compulsory trade each apprentice is required to complete a total 7200 hours training. 85% of this is on the job with the remaining being offered through an approved training delivery agent. Upon completion of these requirements each apprentice will be required to receiving a passing mark of 70% on their final exam earning them their Certificate of Qualification.

Brock Ford apprentices Brendon and Cole have been busy working on removing parts from vehicles, repairing small dents, welding, sandblasting, prepping, masking, priming and painting. “As the complexity of this trade increases, we require apprentices with high skill levels and a passion for the industry. Coolmark “Hits the Mark!”

Coolmark Mechanical is a York Region HVAC contractor that specializes in designing, building, and servicing refrigerated space for food industry clients across the GTA. Based in Woodbridge, Coolmark has carried on a 15-year commitment to training apprentices since its founding in 1996 by Claudio Gulli, president of the company.

“We like to train apprentices, but we are particular about who we will hire,” said Claudio. “We are looking for workers with some knowledge of refrigeration, but who also have a good attitude and are willing to learn. We want apprentices to take advantage of technology and the internet to gain more knowledge about refrigeration. There is so much to learn in our trade and knowledge is power.”

A Coolmark Installation in Progress

Coolmark turned to apprenticesearch.com when it was time to hire new apprentices this year. Claudio’s foreman, Joe D’Ambrosio found the website through an internet search and posted an apprenticeship opportunity. In a very short time, the company had hired two apprentices off the site.

“Both guys have worked out well for us,” said Claudio. “They ask questions and are good listeners. They come to work with respectful attitudes and learn well. We’re glad we found them.” Both apprentices will be receiving the in-class portion of their training at the United Association HVAC and Refrigeration Pipefitters Local Union 787 in Brampton.

Coolmark is one of those companies that stays busy year round. “The food business isn’t really seasonal,” said Claudio, “people always have to eat.” And as long as this company continues to satisfy its many commercial customers, the referrals and the additional work will keep on coming.

Tina Hart Profile

Tina Hart’s career path changed dramatically over a four year period. First she discovered the one kind of work that most interested and motivated her – stone masonry. Then she pursued her new passion from apprenticeship training to Red Seal certification. And finally she established her own business – Galt Stone Masonry – and became her own boss – all in less than four years time!

In December 2007, Tina registered on www.apprenticesearch.com in the hopes of finding work. Her landscape design program at the University of Guelph had exposed her to stone cutting and stonework, and she wanted to learn more about this type of work as an apprentice. Within days, she was hired by Old World Stone in Burlington, and found very quickly that stone restoration and masonry was highly interesting and satisfying work. Tina completed the in-class portions of her apprenticeship at the Ontario Masonry Training Centre in Mississauga and went on to achieve Red Seal certification within three years.

“Apprenticesearch.com changed my life,” said Tina. “It still amazes me that one decision could so dramatically affect my career path. And it continues to be a wonderful career for me. I still feel like I am learning new things with every new project. I’ve been very fortunate.”

Recently Tina set off in a new direction, establishing her own business, Galt Stone Masonry (www.harttstone.com). Specializing in the use of natural stone to restore historical buildings or to install new masonry, her company prides itself on superior craftsmanship and high quality service at affordable prices. Projects of special note include the re-pointing of two 125 year-old Rubble Stone Granite homes in Cambridge and the creation of castable refractory pizza ovens able to withstand temperatures up to 2,300 degrees.

Tina has thrived in a trade generally dominated by males. “How I approach the people I work with is the key,” she said. “There definitely is a place for women in masonry. I approach my work in a professional manner and find that I am respected for what I can do on the job.”

Stonecutting and masonry continue to give Tina great satisfaction. “I recently cut and created six Roman arches and thought to myself – these arches will likely still be standing 400 years from now. Now that’s amazing!”

Hopefully the future success of Galt Stone Masonry will be equally amazing. Apprentice Erin Cannon, and Service Manager David Rodgers

Canadian Tire, Upper Gage

The first Canadian Tire store was founded in Toronto in 1922. In 1934, twelve years later, Canadian Tire opened its first store on Ottawa Street in Hamilton. Now there are over 482 stores across Canada employing more than 58,000 employees. The majority of the stores operate in distinct categories of auto parts, auto service, tools, hardware, sporting goods, houseware and seasonal items.

I spoke to David Rodgers, Service Manager of the Upper Gage location, established in 1982, to get his views on our website “apprenticesearch.com”. He heard about the website about a year ago through an employment job bank. “It’s a great website, why go anywhere else to post a job opportunity when this website is FREE and provides great service and has qualified applicants looking to get started in the skilled trades”, he said. David has hired five people from our site, some getting started in the auto trade and others as signed apprentices.

Over the years, David has helped many students decide if this is the career for them by taking on co-op students from nearby high schools. When I asked him what feature he liked best about the site he said “Once your posting has been approved it’s great how fast the applicants start applying to the posting”. “I receive their resumes by email and I can look them over to see if they have the qualifications I’m looking for and call them right away for an interview”.

I also spoke to Erin Cannon, who was recently hired there through our website as a second year Automotive Service Technician Apprentice. Erin took co-op in high school and knew then that the auto trade was the career she wanted to pursue.

Erin is active in mentoring at seminars including:
- Skills Canada – Ontario “Skills Work! For Women” networking dinners
- Hamilton Training Advisory Board’s “TECH: Technology and Trades for Women”. Erin heard about our website while attending this event at the Hamilton Convention Centre.

Erin is enjoying learning new skills at this location of Canadian Tire store and is working towards completing her apprenticeship. Good luck and all the best Erin!

Patisserie D’Or Profile

Monica Soulabaille, owner of Patisserie D’Or in Oakville, is enthusiastic about www.apprenticesearch.com. “It’s the only place I go when I need to hire a baker apprentice. I appreciate being able to log in and check out the jobseekers myself,” she said. “I’ve used the website several times and it works really better than anything else for our business.”

The site also worked well for Meagan Luftman. A recent graduate of Robert Bateman High School in Burlington, Meagan knew she wanted to pursue her interests in cooking and baking after high school. She developed her culinary skills while in school by completing a co-op placement in a local bakery and participating in regional and provincial skills competitions.

It was at the Ontario Skills Competition in Waterloo in May 2010 that Meagan picked up a flyer from www.apprenticesearch.com. She decided to register on the website after graduating from Robert Bateman. After posting her resume and checking the apprenticesearch job board, she applied for the baker apprentice position posted by Patisserie D’Or. “Things moved quickly from there,” she said. “Within three days I had an interview and was asked to start work. This site has worked so well for me that I have told several of my friends to give it a try.”

Things have worked out well for both employer and apprentice. “We’re very pleased with Meagan’s positive and enthusiastic nature,” said Monica. “She is very reliable and is a quick learner.”

Meagan agrees there’s a lot to learn. “I never really have done serious French baking before. I’m constantly learning new things as we prepare croissants, tarts, cakes, and pastries – all freshly made on the premises. It’s been a great experience for me,” she said. Monica’s husband Jean-Luc is the pastry chef who oversees Meagan’s training.

Patisserie D’Or (see www.patisseriedor.com for additional information) has registered Meagan as an apprentice with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities. She hopes to attend George Brown College in Toronto for the in-class portion of the apprenticeship at. In the meantime, the on-the-job training (and learning) in Oakville will keep her busy!

It's Raining again

We were optimistic that the rain would hold off all night. The repairs to the car were all good. The car was very fast and drove well. After a couple of small adjustments to the brake system, we were right where we needed to be. Unfortunately we needed to be under our tents as the rain came and washed away any hopes of racing. Looks like Flamboro will be it for the year. Hope to see everyone out there cheering us on. Let's hope for some nice weather.

Hey Mister, Your going the wrong way

Kawartha was a rough night for the appsearch team. We were pretty quick in the heat race and had a good run going for the feature. A change in the schedule made our choice of set up wrong. The car was too tight and the front tires were just pushing along the track. We will remember that for next year. On the last lap we attempted to pass for 4th position. The 40 car drove it in way too far and he started to spin right in front of us. I lifted off the gas as he body checked our right front. This allowed him to save his car and allowed us to get spun by the car behind us. Not too bad, we didn't hit anything, or so I thought. It seemed like a long time watching cars fly past me facing the wrong direction on the track. Then the last 2 cars got together way back in the corner. I watched them touch once, twice and start spinning towards me. They got bigger in a hurry. Next thing I know the 60 car is almost on my lap. So we had to say good bye to the left front of the car, to bad it nearly made it all year. Testing on Tuesday found some issues and we repaired them easily. Off to Sunset.

Time Trials and 50 laps at the Beach

The weather was terrible all the way to the front gate of Sauble Speedway. As soon as we pulled in the rain stopped and the sun tried to peek out from behind the clouds. We had a new procedure for qualifying at this race. Our series mandated transponders to allow official times to be documented. With the system up and running we did 2 laps of qualifying. One by one the drivers took to the track. Each trying to be faster than the car before them. We qualified second last based on points. Our first lap was nothing to write home about, 6th on the speed chart. My plan worked as the heat built up in the tires just enough. Lap 2 was great, the only car in the field to break the 16 second mark. 15.87 secs. We were 3 tenths faster than anyone else and on the pole position for the feature. With our inversion to set the field we lined up in 7th for the start. we wasted no time getting to the front, on lap 10 we set sail, but we had an anchor behind us. The 02 car was glued to my back bumper. This is the first 50 lap feature we have run in 3 years. I know I had the fastest car, but how fast is fast enough to last 50 laps on the tires and brakes. I drove smooth, Dave called a great race on the radios, and we saved the car for the end. Just in time for a caution with 4 laps to go. There went my 3 car length lead. Why make it easy. On the restart the track was very slippery from the oil from the 16 cars blown motor. I had a decent restart and pulled a little on second place. Another caution came out for contact. All I needed was another good start and no mistakes to take the win. We did and on the last corner I drifted a little high. The 02 drove to the inside and we went side by side across the line. I was ahead by half a car. It was a great night for our team. Thanks to the rowdy fans up in turn 4 for cheering so loud. Up next is Kawartha Speedway, we won there last year and hope to repeat.

First at Flamboro

Finally a perfect day of racing. The weather was warm, a nice breeze and a trip to our local speedway. After the short drive down the road, we unloaded the car and could just relax. It was a big race night for our division and for the late models. All the fastest drivers were there, including some Nascar Canadian drivers. It was good to see the driver I had spotted for some many years ago. He was now spotting for the 66 car in our series. We had something to prove. Add into the mix we had about 75 relatives and close friends at the track. We kept to ourselves and stuck to our race plan. In the heat race we finished second, we almost completed a pass for the win but backed out. The feature we started near the back of the field. We wanted to be out front early on and passed cars as quick as we could to get there. Just before half way we took the lead and set sail. Then we had a series of HUGE wrecks. Some of the cars were really destroyed. A couple of red flags and what seemed to take forever to clean up the mess, we went back to green. This was starting to feel like Mosport all over again. This time we put in solid lap times and stayed in the best racing groove we could. On lap 30 we took the checkers and started our celebration. We were perfect in tech lane and the win was ours. Thanks to all who came out to cheer, support and just say hi. It is great to win on our home track. This gives us a little more confidence going to Sauble in a couple of weeks. Next up 50 lap feature and 2 laps of time trials. Should be some fun. See you at the beach.

Rain Delay

It was an interesting trip up to Varney. I have only been there once before 10 + years ago. Since then a new paving job and a track design change. Add in a days worth of rain and us waiting until 6 pm before we could practice, nobody knew what to expect. Dave and I tried a new set up on the car and we were shocked at how uncomfortable the car was to drive. All the changes were supposed to make it comfortable, so we learned something after the heat race. Go back to what we know works. After that we started our 50 lap feature in 17th position. Soon after the start the race officials called it a 30 lap race. Once we found this out I had to start hustling. We made it up to 4th and then I got pushed up high on the track and spun out the car. We did not hit anything, very lucky. To the back of the pack again, all the ground I made up before had to start again. With 11 laps remaining I started again in 17th. At the checkered flag we made it back up to 4th. A good finish for us, if only we had another 20 laps. Overall a pretty good night for us. We passed 26 cars in 30 laps even with the rain, shortage of practice and race laps. Over we go to Flamboro our home track, Aug 7. See you there.

From the wrecker to the checkers

Sunset proved to be a turning point for our team. The last time we visited the facility we left the track on the tow truck. The first time in my car racing career we could not finish a race. This was a very tough time for us. After Mosport and the flat tire our team was somewhat flat as well. A quick test at the local track and some new brakes seemed to be what we were missing. We won the heat race and lined up deep in the field for the feature. We pushed the car as hard as possible and we were at the front by half way. We had many restarts and cautions to deal with. All the while we kept a fast pace and a steady lead to the checkered flag. this is what the team needed and it really turned our spirits around. Next up is Varney.

Mosport Fan Appreciation Night

Finally some really nice racing weather. Down the 401 we go and up to Mosport. I really like this track, the asphalt is old, rough and really bumpy. This place separates the drivers unlike some other tracks we race at. To go fast here, you need to drive the car smooth but aggressive. I have the aggressive part figured out, I just wasn't so smooth. Thomson and I are the only winners here in our series history. So you you know how bad I wanted to win again. It has been a while and this was our place to make it happen. The heat went great, a small adjustment to the front end after practice proved to be the right call. We started 8Th and only had 8 laps top get to the front. The apprenticesearch car picked off drivers pretty easy and at the half way mark we were in second place. Once we passed the leader, it was all over as I stretched the lead to about 8 seconds. The fans all came down during the intermission and it was great to see all the people who follow my team and cheer for us. It's funny that some of my fans get really mad when I don't do well. Lots of fans watched us struggle with the wall at Sunset and were pleased to see the car at the front again. In the feature we started from the pole and got off to a great start. We were up front until the halfway mark of the race when the track was red flagged for a big wreck on the front straight. Once we got rolling again the pace car made us drive down pit road while they cleaned up the track. On the restart my car felt a little bit off, for the next 15 laps it became a struggle to keep the pace of the leaders. One at a time they started to pick me off, the 02 was first, then 66 and on the last corner the 99 got by me with a pretty rough pass. I was really mad at how the car changed, I thought it was my driving, I wasn't sure what really happened. Once I was out of the car, I could hear what was wrong. The right front tire had a small hole in it and was leaking air. It was down 16 pounds compared to normal. So I felt a little better about giving up spots late in the race. Good news though, 4 new tires for Sunset on July 17. See you there.

At the beach

The Sauble Beach race started out very wet and soggy. We drove into the rain the entire way there. About 5 minutes away the sun came out and dried everything up nicely. The races were very exciting. We had a battle the whole race, with the leaders. Side by side action for almost the whole race, with the top four drivers gunning for the win. First it was Forbes, then my turn, then Nicholson's turn, and then along came Thomson. With a hand full of laps to go, I put a sweet pass on the 99 car for second, or so I thought. He had different plans and came down the track and we had contact. My right front rolled up onto his left rear exiting turn two. The contact knocked my hands off the steering wheel and sent me spinning into the infield at full speed. I slid in the wet grass for almost the whole back straightaway before regaining control of the car. As I pulled it back onto the track, I was passed by the 04 car. Not too bad, we only lost one spot. it was neat to see how fast the emergency crew can run when a car is aimed at them at 65 MPH, glad we missed everyone. A late caution came out and we took advantage of the restart. We passed up to 3rd and almost got second, half a car back. It was a fun night for everyone. One of the closest battles up front in recent history. Off to Mosport.

Rain Out

After about what seemed to be an eternity in the shop, the car was alll back together. Sat morning after about 60 hours of labour we tested the car on our private secret test track. The car ran well, did everything it was asked and was quite fast. Just ask Dave. Thanks to everyone that helped repair the car. We used an auto body tech, welder, machinist, small engine tech, and even had a trailer tech help us out. Not to mention our tire specialist, chassis specialist and even the kids helped out. After all the hard work, blood, sweat and tears we loaded the Hudson Hornet up and were ready to go. Just moments into our trip the sky opened up and down came the rain. They called the race shortly after that. Thanks again to all those that helped make the repairs. See you at Sauble.

And then the wheels came off the wagon

What a rough night for the apprenticesearch team. The car was very well prepared and very fast. The troubles started early in the first heat. The car in front on the starting grid was leaking gas all over the track and my car. I called on the radio to have him black flagged, but no luck. We went into the first corner and he slid in his own gas, so did I. I spun him around and we didn't even make it half a lap. We managed to come back and finish fourth place. In the feature we had the car to beat. We started quickly moving past the cars in front of us. With about 5 laps to go we had a caution for a couple of spun out cars. On the restart I was pressuring the leader when my car took off up the track. We hit the front stretch wall and that ended our night. The centre of the wheel broke and the whole rim and tire went flying high in the air and down the racetrack. I am just glad that there were no injuries. Our safety equipment was put to the test as I had lots of sparks inside the car and a pretty Good hit into the wall. I am glad that I have invested in quality equipment. Overall it didn't even hurt too much. Just mad that we were running so good and to have a $150 rim cause so much extra work. Looks like we will be back on track for Varney next Sat. The guys at the shop have one busy week ahead of them.

Tool Box Talks

One of the most valuable safety related tools, isn't a tool at all. Recently we have implemented a mandatory morning meeting. We call it the toolbox talk. All employees are brought in and we discuss the days workload, process and hazards. We include all the employees and ask them for their input. We have found a reduction in injuries, and the shop is more organized. Everyone receives the same information and they can all work together to ensure the workload is organized and executed safely. Once all the hazards and safety measures have been discussed, we write them in the book and everyone signs off that they have the proper instructions for the day. The meetings bring everyone together and we have different employees give the talk. Once everyone has had a turn at it they become more comfortable and the meetings take about ten minutes. From a supervisors standpoint, a ten minute meeting can save hours of paperwork from injuries. Toolbox talks are fast and easy, try them for yourself and get everyone involved.

First At Flamboro

What a great way to finish off the season. Testing at Flamboro went great. We dialed the car in perfectly. Fortunately for us the race on Saturday had the exact same weather conditions. Second in the heat race and starting in the 8th spot for the feature. It took us 12 laps to get to the lead and we just drove away to a 4 car length lead. Dave and Jason did a great job after the heat race changing out a suspect ignition coil. Repaired with plenty of time to spare. Now the off season starts. Strip the car down and shine it all up, replace any worn parts and get ready for next year. What colour should we paint it for next year????

Sunset lives up to its name, sort of

Finally a nice day to go racing, a little sun, some showers during our heat race and a cool evening for the feature. The car was way too loose in the heat race. Dave made an adjustment for the feature. We tightened it up, but so did the track surface once it got colder. We had a great race for almost the whole 30 laps with the 04 car. I thought he had me a few times, but we always seemed to pull through on the straightaway. It was an intense battle to the end. 4th place in the heat and in the feature. Sitting solid in third with one race left. Please Mother Nature, be a race fan on Sept 12.

Flamboro was rained out for both days of racing.

Heritage Champ Again

2 for 2, This year we really had to work for the race win. The 500 cc Honda in front of me was throwing roost the size of golf balls. It should have been easier, except for the terrible start I had. I hit the gate and had to back my bike up. Just then the gate dropped and everyone took off. It was all worth it. A little hard work goes a long way. Now all I need is a hot tub to soak in for a while. Next year at Walton we will be going for a third title.

Not much racing, but we were the first ones there. The long 3 hour haul up for nothing. Well, we did have lunch at the very cold beach. Long pants and sweaters, not the usual shorts and T's. We will try again at Flamboro. This will really tighten up the points with only 3 races left.

Making Progress

Flamboro went well for us, fast in practice and good in the heat. The top 3 were nose to tail as we moved up through the pack. We landed in the lead about 1/2 way. That's when it got interesting. A record 7 cautions. we held the lead for 6 of them, made 1 small mistake on the 7th and we ended up in 2nd. Another good night for the points race.

Sunset, starting 7 points out of 2nd place. 2nd in the heat with a really loose race car. More drifting action. Dave made a couple of adjustments and we started the feature in 9th. By 1/2 way we were in 3rd and putting pressure on those in front. We were on the outside of the second place car when he drove us up the track out of anything that resembles a racing groove. The 02 car passed us both on the inside. Now we had some extra work ahead of us. We dug deep and finished 2nd again for the 2nd week in a row. With that we move up to 2nd in points, 1 point ahead of the 66 car. Sauble beach here we come.

Smoke gets in your eyes

Sauble Beach, lunch on the beach and plenty of sunshine. Third place in the heat race and satrting the 30 lap feature in 9th. Contact in the heat race with the right rear of the car made the rest of the night interesting. It seems that we broke the axle bearing. This took out the seal and leaked gear oil all over the rear brakes. Holy smokes would best describe the amount of smoke coming off the hot brake rotors. The car started to fill up with smoke on lap 3. We ran our cooling fans and helmet blower on high. This did little to keep my eyes from burning and watering. It looked like I watched a sad movie when I finally got out of the car. Even with no back brakes and tons of smoke, we drove it like we stole it. we ended up 5th place for the night. Flamboro is up next in the stretch of back to back races. Anyone have a tissue?

Fan appreciation night was another big hit. After signing over 2000 hero cards, we were the first feature of the night. After many long nights in the shop we finally figured out what the problem was with the car. I know, I know, even I questioned myself. Could it be the DRIVER. As it turns out the driver still does a pretty good job as we finished third after the 25 lap feature. We started our heat in 10th and moved up to 3rd in 5 laps. Finally the car goes into the corner straight as an arrow. Just the way we like it. Thanks to Dave, Jason, Jim, Len and everyone who brought their ideas forward. Scott and Bill as well for keeping us all calm and collected when things got heated. It is a great comfort knowing all the skilled trade help I have. They make excellent educated decisions and it shows up with strong results. Off to Sauble beach this Saturday night. 3rd in points, 1/2 way next time by.

Drifting Competition

Sunshine, rain and more sun made the track extremely slippery. Sunset is usually known for the very high grip surface. Not this week. The apprenticesearch.com car did more drifting than racing. Not exactly fast, but it sure was a hand full inside the car. All we did between winning at Kawartha and Sunset was wash the car and wax it. Not sure why we struggled so much all night long. We tried more big changes and started way back in 10th. A couple of cautions had us restarting on the slippery outside lane. At the end of 30 laps we made it up to 5th and put 6-8 car lengths on the rest of the field. We should have brought it back on the tow truck, not in 5th. Thanks to the crew for all the hard work. We will get it right for Mosport. Looking forward to our next win this Saturday for fan appreciation night. Come out and get your hero cards and candy. See you on the front straight during intermission.

Practice makes perfect

It took a while, 75 laps of practice to be sure we had the right setup. Dave,Jason, Tom and Jim all did a great job wrenching on the car. We tried everything this week, including the kitchen sink. Shocks, springs, sway bar, brakes, wedge and tire pressures. It was a lot of work. Third in the heat race and finally a big win in the feature. Kawartha was the last remaining track that our team had not won a race. The pass around the outside of turn 1 was a little scary. I trusted the adjustments the crew made to the car and it all worked out. Another good points night and a thrilling race for the fans. Hard work and effort always pay off. I was not so lucky at the slots, but that's another story.

Finally after a long winters nap the race tracks are open for testing. The Pro Challenge cars were at Flamboro Speedway on Saturday. 10 drivers showed up and were ready to race. The Rookie title will be a good fight this year, and the race for the top 3 should be tougher than ever. A bunch of spins and brushing the wall made things interesting. The Apprenticesearch.com car ran perfect and we dodged all the on track mayhem. We just need to shake off some cob webs from the driver. Looking forward to May 9Th. See you there

Safety first

Lately there has been a big shift towards health and safety in the construction sector. Companies are finding that they actually save money for having a safe workplace. Decreased W.S.I.B. premiums, happy and healthy workers are part of a smart business plan. At work I am on the Health and Safety committee. We have monthly meetings and bring new ideas to our employer. Getting involved is the best way to help protect yourself and other workers. I try to be a leader at work, just like on the track. Every time I climb through the window of my race car, we are prepared for what ever may come at us. Crashes, fires and other drivers are some of the dangers. Helmets, fire suits, extinguishers and radios help us with the first two. Any suggestions on what to do with the drivers? Come out and see the car and it's safety features at the Brantford Civic Centre on Nov 26 from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Look forward to seeing you there. Be safe, work smart, finish first. Safety first.

The season came to an abrupt stop on the front stretch at Sunset Speedway. I will give you one guess why........ Imagine that, more rain!!!!!! We managed to do some practice and that was fun, but we really want to go racing. Thanks to everyone at apprenticesearch.com for the tremendous support all season long. We look forward to next year and some fall shows. Thanks to all the fans from Norris Racing.

For a change the weatherman worked with us. The track was fast and we had lots of fun. Second place in the heat race and a fourth place starting spot in the feature. The car was good and we made it into second place by the half way mark. A couple of cautions and some interesting restarts. Contact with the 71 car allowed the leader to pull a two car length lead on us. We finished second and gained a few points. A great way to start back racing after so many rain outs. Next stop Sunset.

The sun was warm, the beach was packed and we were fast in practice. We drew the second last qualifying spot and had our plan set. That is about the same time the wind picked up. Tents, chairs, coolers and small animals (not really) went flying by. Then the rain came and put a damper on everyone. Maybe next time. See you at Flamboro, rain or shine.

National Champion???

After weeks of rain and another off weekend we went back to our roots. Racing motocross at the Trans Canada Nationals. I know race car drivers are not supposed to be able to ride on two wheels, let alone win. With the support of apprentice search we tested well and set some very good lap times. A holeshot and the lead of every lap. The toughest competition was my brother Tom Norris. He was jumping the huge double (I was chicken) and gaining ground on me pretty fast. I made it past the lapped riders better and held on for the win. Yeah I know it was the Heritage class, but a win is a win. See you at the beach for 50 laps. I hope I remember to keep it out of the dirt.

We raced the weatherman and he beat us real bad. The Barrie area had a downpour that lasted over an hour prior to race time, forcing the cancellation of the races. Flamboro is next for our series and we hope to see you there.

From the backyard to the beach

Three week in a row is tough on any team. We did well at Flamboro in qualifying and the feature, 2nd place, still showing improvements. At Sauble beach we battled all night long with the 99 car. He did a great job holding us behind him. For most of the race he was sideways. It was tough to get past when you don't know where he is going. We drove by him on the restart and with 5 laps to go we were passing into third. We could only get up to the front wheel of the 71 car and did not make the pass stick. The last lap the 71 was rubbing the decals, paint and fibreglass off the side of the apprenticesearch.com car. He held us off by about 1 foot. Anyone know a good paint guy? Decals? 50 laps to go next time by.
